A busy week in LSC and ASC

31st May 2024
The Learning Support and Autism Specific Centres have been very busy this week! The boys and girls have been working very hard developing their Literacy and Numeracy skills through the individualised programmes. We use a multi-sensory approach when learning new concepts which involves both practical and written activities. This ensures that each child receives the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding in a variety of ways.

In Literacy, LSC 1 have been learning to hold a pencil in the correct way, developing letter formation skills, identifying initial sounds, matching rhyming words and building sentences.

LSC 2 have been developing their comprehension skills, identifying high frequency words, using segmenting and blending skills to spell words, using Lexia and developing fine motor skills.

LSC 3 have been working hard to develop their reading and spelling skills using Lexia and Accelerated Reading. The boys have enjoyed exploring the writing theme of Explanations.

ASC 1 have been practising their focused reading skills, using ICT to revise punctuation, reinforcing Phonics knowledge and practising handwriting skills.

ASC 2 have been developing modelled, shared and independent writing skills through a variety of topic based writing activities.

In Numeracy, LSC 1 have been writing and ordering numbers, identifying the biggest and smallest numbers, telling the time to o’clock, investigating heavy and light, ordering the days of the week and buying items with 1p coins.

LSC 2 have been identifying 2D shapes, matching numbers to sets within 20, matching Numicon to numbers within 5 and using 1p and 2p coins in shopping activities.

LSC 3 have been working hard on Place Value, mental maths skills and recognising and making different times on digital and analogue clocks.

ASC 1 have been developing counting skills, making given amounts of money using 1p and 2p coins, learning to tell the time to o’clock and half past and learning to evaluate number sentences.

ASC 2 have been developing strategies to enable them to ad, subtract, multiply and divide mentally.

As part of our Grow in Love programme the children put on a beautiful assembly for their parents. They shared what they had been learning about Mary, Mother of Jesus and they demonstrated how to create a May Altar. They also sang songs about Mary and showcased their Makaton skills. Every child played an important role in this assembly and the audience were very impressed.

Every afternoon, the children take part in Activity Based Learning. This provides the children with the opportunity to visit the other classrooms and participate in carousel activities involving Art, STEM, ICT, RE and PE.

Integration is an important aspect of our Centres. Every child has the right to feel included and valued by our whole school community. Each child visits their assigned mainstream home class where they participate in various lessons throughout the week alongside their peers. This provides valuable social and emotional development opportunities and is thoroughly enjoyed by all of the children involved.
