November in P4

24th Nov 2023

The Primary 4 children have had an enthusiastic, energetic and creative start to the second half of Term 1. ⭐️

Continuing with our theme ‘Home Sweet Home’ we have been exploring different aspects of houses and homes and learning new skills and ideas in a multitude of areas of work. 🏡

In Literacy, local author, Declan Carville, has introduced us to the fairies of ‘The Fairy Glen’ and we have been designing and describing little fairy houses to suit the little characters that we have met. Our hard work on adjectives and verbs over the last few months, has helped us find suitable words to match their personalities best.

As part of our outdoor learning and linking with our STEM work, we have extended our learning experiences outside and in groups, we have found the perfect locations around our school to build little houses for our favourite characters using fairy doors we have created together. If you look closely you might see little streaks of light, where the fairies came to visit us at work. 🧚

In ICT, we have begun to look at ‘green screening’ and experimenting with software to add ourselves to images of our fairy homes.

In Numeracy, as part of our mental maths, we have been learning quicker strategies to add and take away nine.  We have also been looking at measures of time and most recently weight. We have been familiarising ourselves with what a kilogram looks like and feels like.  The weight is the same but the size of the item is not.  We have been exploring inside and outside of school to find items that are greater than and less than or just the same as one kilogram.  We have had fun comparing and estimating together.

In Art, Mrs Heatherington has been teaching us about ‘mark making’ and how to use these skills to create light and dark shades and tones in our line drawings. These will be put to good use as we do pen studies of the model homes we created at the beginning of term. ✏️

In music, Mrs Eastwood has been teaching us about dynamics. We learned about forte and piano - loud and soft and then we practised these by playing different instruments. 🎶

In PE, in addition to our weekly hurling sessions with Colum, Mrs Conlan has been helping us to develop our fist passing and Gaelic skills. 🏐

As part of our religion programme, Primary 4 have been chosen to present the first class assemblies of the school year. We have been busy practising our songs and prayers in each of our classrooms. Mrs Eastwood’s class are presenting a remembrance assembly for our loved ones in Heaven; Mrs Heatherington’s class are showcasing the significance of Advent and Mrs Conlan’s class are celebrating the meaning of Christmas. We were delighted to sing some of our songs to Fr Slater when he popped in to visit us this week.

And even with all of that going on, we still had time to play with our friends and enjoy some well earned golden time. 😊

As this week closes, we are looking forward to a great weekend of festive fun with the Christmas Tree lights being turned on in our community this evening and our school’s Christmas Festive Fair on Sunday for all the family. 🎄
