Busy Bee’s in Primary 6!
As part of our energy topic, we looked at the work of energy artist Julia Watkins. In her picture entitled Experience the Flow, we observed how she depicted energy. We discussed the colour used and the wavy lines which showed the movement of energy. We were fascinated by the 3-D dolphins which she had managed to create. Inspired by her work, we created our own 3-D hands using straight and wavy lines and bands of colour.
In Numeracy, we learned about angles and the different directions of the compass. We played direction games in which the teacher called out instructions which we had to follow. We turned clockwise and anticlockwise a specific number of degrees. We had to listen carefully and focus well it was great fun.
In World Around Us, we found out about our most important energy source. In Literacy, we used metaphors to describe different images of the sun.
In our 'World Around Us' topic, we've been having a wonderful time learning all about Energy. We found out that we use energy for everything, from sleeping and chilling to walking, running, and even getting dressed. It's like magic that makes everything happen! We linked this with numeracy in order to calculate how much energy we used when carrying out different activities. We used stopwatches to time ourselves when outside. We timed how fast we could get dressed, how long it took to walk, run, and even the time we spent just chilling and sleeping! As mathematicians, we calculated the minutes spent on each activity and worked out how much energy we had used. This was an exciting lesson and we loved mixing numeracy with our energy topic.
As part of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) exploration, we embarked on a thrilling adventure by creating balloon-powered cars! Each student became a little engineer, designing and crafting their own unique cars to compete in a race to see whose creation could travel the furthest distance.
We crafted wonderful detailed explanation texts to explain how we did it. In these texts, we spilled the secrets of our creative process—revealing step-by-step instructions on how to make these fabulous balloon-powered cars. From materials needed to the nitty-gritty of assembling it, our explanation texts serve as an instruction manual on how you too could create a balloon- powered car at home.
In our Numeracy lessons, we have been learning about fractions, decimals, and percentages, with being able to convert between the three. As part of this, we completed a symmetrical pattern using squared paper. We created our own symmetrical patterns using a range of colours and designs, with the focus on being able to work out the fractions, decimals, and percentages of each colour we used. We thoroughly enjoyed the practicality of this lesson and bringing numeracy to life through this engaging activity.
As part of our ICT, we have been exploring the use of Minecraft. With it being internet safety week this week, Children were tasked with completing internet safety lessons using the application. Children enjoyed honing their online safety knowledge by testing themselves through the online games and quizzes. Additionally, we applied our knowledge base of our Viking topic in term 1, and created Viking longships within the ‘create world’.
