A great start to Term 3 in P5

26th Apr 2024
The Primary 5 children have started term 3 with enthusiasm. In our STEM activities, they worked together in groups to build pyramids using cocktail sticks and marshmallows, demonstrating patience and problem-solving skills. They integrated this hands-on experience with their ICT, using Code.org to program pyramid designs with commands like forward, right, left, and 90 degrees, even incorporating loops for efficiency. They also created models of Egyptian pyramids in Minecraft and are currently enjoying creating a chocolate factory for Mr. Wonka, showcasing their imaginative abilities.

In Literacy, the Primary 5 year group are continuing to develop their spelling through games and tasks on Spelling Shed. They are currently focusing on the spelling rules associated with adding suffixes and are continuing to develop their dictionary skills. The children have recently finished reading their class novel, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", where they engaged in activities inspired by the story. They participated in a Quentin Blake art workshop, where they depicted the wonderful Mr. Wonka. This reading experience allowed the children to compare the book to its movie adaptation, deepening their appreciation for Roald Dahl's storytelling.

In addition, the Primary 5 year group have been exploring the techniques used to enhance poetry, with a particular focus on the works of Michael Rosen. They've had lots of fun reciting the poems, using expression and tone to engage their audience.

In Numeracy, the focus has been on exploring 3D shapes. Through hands-on investigations, the children have examined different nets and solid shapes, enhancing their understanding of 3d properties. They've also been working on fractions, exploring ways to make 1 whole with fractions of the same denominator, matching equivalent fractions, and enjoying interactive games to reinforce their understanding.
Additionally, in PE this week, the children have enjoyed practicing their batting and fielding skills as part of Rounders Week, relishing the chance to engage in this team sport activity.
