We have had an eventful and enjoyable time in Primary 4 this week for lots of different reasons - we took part in Shared Education, participated in World Book Day activities, prepared for our next big sacrament - First Penance and had a celebrity visit from a TV weather presenter from TG4!
Even with all these amazing things happening, we still were busy building up our skills in all our areas of learning.
In Literacy, we have been developing our vocabulary and awareness of characters and setting through our new class novel - ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl. We have been learning how words can make us like or dislike a character and how using adjectives in descriptions can help us imagine what things might look, smell, taste, sound or feel like in our brains.
In Numeracy, we have been investigating maths concepts both inside and outside the classroom. We have been practically getting to know the three times tables better; creating pictograms and human graphs of our favourite weather in data handling.
In our World Around Us, we have been researching weather, we have been looking closely at how weather is measured and recorded and how it is presented to show what is happening in different areas. We have been getting to know the names of towns and counties around Ireland. To prepare for our special visitor, we have also been learning some weather words and a weather song in Irish. We even had a STEM activity where we recreated a tornado in a jar!
In RE, we have been preparing our prayers, songs and ‘I am sorry’ cards for our First Penance next week. We are looking forward to receiving our new sacrament.
In our carousel activities, Mrs Conlan has been mentoring us in how to create a weather ebook and developing our ICT skills. Mrs Eastwood has helping us get to know classical music through Vivaldi’s Winter. We have talked about different weather in winter and how we could use percussion instruments to compose sounds for the varying types of weather. Mrs Heatherington has been teaching us the power of colour in Art and how it can be changed and categorised - highlights/tones, primary/secondary or warm/cool and how these can be used to show mood or impact.
In addition to all of this, we enjoyed all the events of Literacy Week - especially our library visits, Book Character Dress Up Day and No Pens Day. We also loved exploring movement, dance and ball skills in PE. Yet I think we would all agree that ending our week with the lovely Caitrióna Mc Ateer, a weather presenter from TG4 was a real treat!
As part of our ‘Whatever the Weather’ topic, Caitrióna visited our school to do a ‘Q&A’ session about the day to day life of a weather presenter. We had so much fun finding out all about her role at TG4 and thought that it sounded like an amazing job! Caitrióna definitely has inspired a future generation of weather presenters not to mention an interest in picking up a cúpla focal in Irish too.
